This was my first real documentary project and it was probably my most rewarding experience as a photojournalism student so far. It was also my first time shooting a formal multimedia piece and it was a real learning experience (both while shooting and in the hours put in while editing in Final Cut Pro.)
The idea for the project came from a passing discussion with a co-worker during a break one day jordan jumpman team, and after a few months of mulling it over I finally contacted Terri Jane Maxwell (founding member of the 709 Derby Girls). I got fantastic access; the girls were phenomenally welcoming and let me invade their privacy with a big camera rig for a few days, and even let me mount my helmet cameras on them- for that I’m extremely grateful.
